Aquí y Allá is a series of 15 new paintings by Ocampo, all made in 2021 while living in Manizales, Colombia, the artist’s hometown. After six years of living in New York City, Ocampo-Giraldo moved back to Colombia, first settling in Bogotá. After some time, he decided to move the mountainous region he grew up in, the very backdrop of so many of his paintings. Ocampo is an artist of the nostalgiac and often paints from memory. About half of these landscapes are painted without any reference, while the remainder are of real places in Colombia. In the style of the narrators to be found in the books of Kazuo Ishiguro, Ocampo is not entirely reliable. We cannot tell which places are real and which are made up. What is clear, and which comes across in these idyllic canvases is his affection for the home which he has chosen to return to.
